Community Transport is the name given to any type of transport run on a not-for- profit basis to assist people who cannot access private or public transport for any reason.
There might be a variety of reasons why people use Community Transport such as:
• Lack of available transport
• Cost
• Mobility reasons
• Health reasons
• To and from hospital, surgery, dental and optician appointments
• To visit a relative or friend in hospital
• Collect prescriptions, pensions
• Shopping for people who are housebound
• Take people with disabilities to and from day centres or clubs
The Link Schemes across
Wiltshire rely on the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers to help provide
transport for people - many of whom are frail or elderly - to access vital social
and medical services. Providing a transport service not only benefits the passengers,
keeping them independent, active and feeling part of the community but there
are also a raft of benefits that volunteers themselves gain too. “Feeling
part of something useful”, “helping others has always given me a
reason to get up for every morning”, “I was new to the area, so
it’s been an opportunity to meet new friends”, “I learn new
things”, “I’m keeping my skills up to date” and simply
that, “it’s good fun”, are just some of the comments from
volunteers.
We aim to attract new community transport volunteers who may be interested in
driving or getting involved in the running of a community transport group or
both. So, if you have a little or lot of time to give and you enjoy making people
smile, your Seend Link scheme would love to hear from you.
